Nantucket Jacket
PATTERN: "Nantucket Jacket," designed by Norah Gaughan, from Interweave Knits, Winter 2006
YARN: KnitPicks' Andean Silk in Barn Red, replacement for Berroco's Pure Merino
NEEDLES: KnitPicks Options, US size #7
STARTED: 11/21/06
FINISHED: 11/21/07
WHAT I LOVED: This really is a beautiful, classic pattern. The cables, the seed stitch, everything...it's just lovely.
WHAT I DIDN'T: I'll be picky...the allover six-row repeat was boooooring, and is the main reason it took me one year to the day to finish. Also, the pattern took quite a bit of modifying and tweaking, both by my account and by others who have knit it.
MODIFICATIONS: Too many to remember details, but I lengthened the sleeves to full-length, lengthened the overall body (although I still feel it's a bit short, especially in proportion with the long sleeves), and changed the design so that the seed stitch triangles at the bottom were complete, instead of truncated as the pattern would have me do. I also ditched the crocheted scalloped edging in favor of a plan single crochet border, and used shank-style buttons.
WHAT WOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY? Lengthen the body by an additional inch or two.
RECOMMEND THIS PATTERN: Yes, definitely, just check out the knitalong for tips and tricks on modifications.
KNIT THIS PATTERN AGAIN? No way...it's too unique for me to consider making it again.
NOTES: I am very very happy with my Nantucket Jacket...I like the yarn substitution a lot (although the dye in the yarn sometimes caused my hands to break out in hives, but that's my issue), the overall look is unbelievably classy and sophisticated. There are definitely a lot of issues people had with the pattern, so I can't suggest strongly enough that you double-check the knitalong for reference. This Jacket looks good over jeans or dress pants, with a lace camisole or tee...I give this one two very enthusiastic thumbs up!!!!!
