"October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to a list of breast cancer facts posted on komen.org: one woman in eight is at risk for breast cancer; every three minutes a woman learns that she has breast cancer; and every 13 minutes, a woman in the U.S. dies from the disease. Few of us haven’t been touched by it. If we haven’t been diagnosed with it ourselves, we have a mother, sister, cousin, daughter, or friend who has." -from classiceliteyarns.com
Last year, JP and I lost a friend to breast cancer that had spread into her brain. Elda was only 29 when she was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. She was unbelievably tough, battling it ceaselessly, always with a smile and positive attitude. She lost her battle with cancer two days after her wedding to her fiance, Scott, and she is still missed dearly to this day.
This year, I'm honoring her memory by participating in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ravelry member Prettyinpink suggested in the Love Thy Blackberry group that we have our own knit-along, so today I headed over to Joann and found some gorgeous pink Patons Silk Bamboo, then cast on for this beautiful scarf. I'm hoping to finish more than one, in other colors, and then will be donating them to a local cancer treatment center.
